Born in Miami and raised in Newport Beach, California, Steven Hiroyuki “Steve” Aoki built one of electronic music’s most expansive careers by applying an independent punk ethos to global dance culture. While studying sociology and feminist studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara, Aoki converted his student apartment into a creative launchpad, booking underground shows, playing in bands, and releasing local records. In 1996, he formalized this DIY movement by founding Dim Mak Records. Originally a home for indie-rock and post-punk acts like Bloc Party and The Kills, the label eventually evolved alongside Aoki's growing interest in electronic music, adding genre-bending pioneers like The Bloody Beetroots and Klaxons to its roster. Aoki’s own trajectory as a DJ and producer accelerated with his 2007 mix compilation, "Pillowface and His Airplane Chronicles," which captured the electro-indie crossover of the late 2000s. His solo debut album, "Wonderland" (2012), debuted on the Billboard 200 and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Dance/Electronic Album. His relentless tour routine and personal journey were later highlighted in the 2016 documentary "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead," which garnered a 2017 Grammy nomination for Best Music Film. A prolific record producer, Aoki expanded his sound through ambitious concept releases, including his multi-album "Neon Future" series and his fantasy-driven narrative album sequence spanning "HiROQUEST: Genesis" (2022) through "HiROQUEST 3: Paragon" (2025).
